Rehearsal (22apr90) for the Ragged Glory tour (with Crazy Horse) and for the 1970 KQED TV-show. This very rare and unique tape is a second generation copy of the DAT-version made from the ORIGINAL reel-to- reel tape. (I know, this tape has been treed on 'rust', but I got my copy from a different source and therefor a lower generation). The 70-ies part has a little tape hiss.

This is a real gem! Joel Bernstein is Neil's long time companion who came up with this tape of all solo-songs from different venues, recorded during the 1976 solo-tour. It contains some rare stuff like 'Here We Are In the Years', 'Don't Say You Win, Don't say You Loose', 'The loosing End' plus some ol'time favs. All in excellent quality as far as sound and performance is concerned. Songs are a collection from different nights from Nov.6th up until Nov. 24th. This tape was meant for the roadies as a souvenir.

The legendary album. Never released by Neil. There are two versions of Chrome Dreams available. Pete Long in his books 'Ghosts on the road' refers to them as the one with the White cover and the one with the black cover. This is the White cover. All songs are studio recordings, except 'Stringman' which was recorded live at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on 31mar76. There is some hiss (mainly in-between the songs). As a bonus there are three songs from the 22aug77 show with the Ducks (in so-so quality).

A very short lived tour of the ducks (a few shows only) featuring Neil Young on guitar (not much on vocals). At this show only a few of Neil's songs were played amongst some others. For some songs the correct title is not confirmed.
There are two tapes of this show floating around. One of them is incomplete and has the running changed. That one also suffers from a severe speed problem (it runs way too fast).
This tape I have, does have the correct running order and no speed problem (and also slightly lesser his).
I also have another tape from this show (2nd gen, see below) with a bit better sound (less hiss e.g.)

This tape was labelled as Rotterdam, 27may87 but that is wrong. (for a number of reasons). It must be a show from aug / Sep 1982. I'm sure it is the Rotterdam show on September 20th. (BTW, I do have the 'real' 27 / 5 / 87 show as well). Neil announces his band as Bruce Palmer, Ben Keith, Ralph Molino, Joe Lala and Nils Lofgren. Audience is in a good mood, singing along with songs like 'The Needle And The Damage Done', 'Comes A Time', 'Birds' etc. . It is the complete show. Some songs were new at that time, e.g. 'Like An Inca'. 'On The Way Home' cuts in after about 2 minutes and 'Like A Hurricane' has some tape-leaps in it. Complete show.

The compilers sure knew what to include, because they choose one complete show (Hasselt) and further songs which were played only once ('Broken Arrow', 'Down by The River', 'Fuckin' Up') or twice ('Peace And Love') during this short (11 shows only) European tour. These shows are well provided with a lot of feedback. Esp. at the Pukkelpop show Neil sure like to give minutes (!) of feedback. There's a very long versions of 'Scenery', 'Cortez', 'Down By The River' (all > 20min!). The tracks on tapes are recorded in order of the show, not as they appeared on CD.The sound is a little bit out of balance but not severe.

Well, at least 'Cortez' is a real 'killer'. Lots of feedback at this show. Recording was not professional. the sound is a bit distance and some people are talking quite close (the german friends of the taper :-) ), but it is quite listenable. And this was another show I attended. (BTW, the version on 'The European Concerts' is a bit better in sound and from a different taper).

Almost a dream set list with rare performances of songs like 'Hard Luck Stories', 'Hippie Dream' and both 'Throw your Hatred Down' and 'Razar Love' are played twice! Further more some songs from collaboration with Pearl Jam (I'm the Ocean,Throw Your Hatred Down, Downtown) now played with the Horse. Come to think of it, most songs from this gig are originally not recorded with Crazy Horse.
Very Very good performance although there are some flubs. 'Hippie Dream' has a false start. 'Crime In The City' is an electric version.
But there's more. As A filler there are a few song from the succeeding stealth show at the catalyst (19may97) with some premier songs being played. After this show, Neil cut his finger so badly that it resulted in cancelling the European tour that was scheduled :-(. (I do have the complete Catalyst show as well)

Part of the performance by Phish that was broadcast on TV. There are some comments from the hosts in between.

In April 1993 Phish played in Portland. Neil Young was in town as well and the Phish /  / Young jam rumours were flying. On the 1st of April, Phish 'announced' Neil at their set only to be followed by 'Aprils Fool'. (Of course Neil didn't play)
Later that same year they 'announced' Neil again but again the Phish / Neil collaboration didn't occur.
(Both announcements are as a filler on this CD-r)

On the 1998 issue of Farm Aid the line-up featured performances by both Neil Young (one of the organizers) and Phish. Five years after their first joke, it finally happened: Neil And Phish playing together!
And what a performance it was!

During Phish's set, Neil came out prior to the last chorus of 'Runaway Jim' and joined in on guitar, jamming into and awesome 20min version of 'Down By The River' (One of, if not THE best version I've ever heard!!!!!!)
'Runaway Jim' cuts in for it began during the commercial break and Neil  joins in on this song just prior to the final chorus.
'Moonlight In Vermont' features Willie Nelson and Paul Shaffer. 'Will The Circle Be Unbroken' features 4 native Americans.
Just alone 'Down By The River' makes this a real must have for everyone who likes Neil Young or Phish (or both, like me :-) ).

The bare naked Ladies are quite some fun. On the first night they play a special 'rap' including a bit of 'Sugar Mountain' and on the second night they even sing part of "Memory' from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical 'Cats'.
Sara McLachlan was a singer I had never heard before and she made quite an impression on me. Very good voice with good (but as she says herself, depressing) lyrics.

Complete show featuring the premier of the electric version of Greendale. Show is with Crazy Horse, four background singers and a cast of actors.
The performance is quite good with looooong versions some of the songs. E.g. Carmichael (17min) and ´Grandpa´s interview´ (20min, GREAT version) . A very rockin´ version of ´Be The Rain´ and the ´Devil´s Sidewalk´ has a catchy ´Greendale Greendale´ sung by the girls.
Throughout there's a bit of crackling noise in the left channel, which sounds like a loose contact in the mic.  The show itself also had a few problems. Neil had to cut an intro in order to tune his guitar and there's a problem with a mic stand.
During the applause for an encore, some guys close to the taper are already singing ´Hey Hey My My´:-)

The answer from members of the 'rust' list to the never (yet) released 'archives' from Mr. Young. This very important set consists of three tapes of ONLY unreleased songs. Some are live, some studio or demo recordings. Most songs you probably have never heard and probably won't find anywhere else. All is from different sources, so the sound quality varies from track to track. Vol.1 is 3rd generation, vol.2 and 3 are 2nd generation tapes.
There are the famous 'elektra' demos, outtakes but most are live recordings. Some are really rare (played on only a few occasions) others were played pretty often but just never released.
These tapes contain a pretty good overview of Neils carreer.What we find here are the early 'squires' single, the elektra demos, the big-band music, acoustic solo songs, electric grunge, country songs, CSN&Y collaborations, etc. etc.
'Sweet Joni' is  for Joni Mitchel and was played only a few times.
'Day And Night We Walk These Isles' is listed in 'Gost On The Road' as being titled 'Sad Movies'
'Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay' isn't a Neil song. It's a cover from Otis Reading..
'Hitchhiker' contains some lyrics which were included in 'Like An Inca'. This song could have been an early version of 'Inka' or Neil just jokes around with the lyrics because the music is so similar ?
'Act Of Love' was later released on 'Mirror Ball' (With Pearl Jam)  but the version on this tape is with Crazy Horse.

Said to be Neil young, but isn't (Still not sure who does sing. Some say Ritchie Furray, some say Loudon Wainwrite III). All songs are acoustic and although not Neil, quite good. It resembles a bit Paul Simons very first (solo) album from the mid-sixties. Please Note: This was a 'regular' release. Not a 'cookie'. The distributing company however had to redraw this release because it was not Neil Young.
